Some permanent markers may contain a small amount of the chemical solvent xylene which can irritate your eyes, nose, throat, skin, and alcohol which may irritate the skin. Occasional writing on skin with a marker pen is not harmful. However, since the skin is highly absorbent, repeated use may not be a good idea even though there is not enough evidence at this time to show that xylene can cause cancer. Non-toxic, water-based, xylene free marker pens are available and a safer choice.
