Athlete’s foot is caused by fungi that thrive in wet, dark, and warm places, making your communal shower floor the perfect place to grow. Though not medically life-threatening, athlete’s foot is an itchy, and sometimes painful, condition. An easy way to reduce your risk of infection is to wear shower shoes or flip-flops.
Also, remember that dorm showers aren’t the only place you can catch athlete’s foot. Locker room floors, and sweaty feet are also places these fungi can grow. Always try to keep your feet clean and dry. After showering, dry your feet well before putting on socks or shoes. Consider bringing an extra pair of clean socks to change into after a gym workout or sports practice.
