First of all, your body needs fats to survive. Fat protects your organs and provides energy to your muscles. However, there are good fats and bad fats, and all fats should be consumed in moderation. Saturated fats and trans fats are considered to be bad fats, while monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are good fats. Generally, bad fats are solid at room temperature, like butter and shortening. Consuming too much bad fat can raise your cholesterol levels, which can lead to a higher risk of heart disease and stroke. Healthy fats, meanwhile, can lower your cholesterol levels. You can find healthy fats in foods such as olive oil, nuts, avocados, and salmon.
